地下鉄のアナウンスをしている人がどんな人か、考えたことはありますか?

多種多様な人々が行き交うニューヨークの地下鉄に明るく響く、歌い上げるようなアナウンス。その背後にある“生き方”に共感が集まっています。

“声”の主は、バーニー・ワゲンブラストさん（67）。心と体の性が一致しないトランスジェンダーの女性です。2009年からニューヨークの地下鉄のアナウンスを担当しています。

バーニーさんの一番古い記憶は4歳のころ祖母の家の化粧台の前で遊んでいるときのことです。当時から「本当の自分」をはっきりと認識していました。しかし、それを隠したまま男性としてプロの声優となりました。

それでも子どものころに感じた思いは消えず、2022年末にトランスジェンダーの女性であることを公表しました。

現在、バーニーさんのもとには、様々な人たちから「地下鉄に乗るたびに励まされるような気持ちになる」という声が寄せられています。

Have you wondered about who makes the subway announcements?

Every day in the New York subway system, one particularly deep and resonant voice echoes brightly throughout the stations guiding thousands of people.

The “voice” is that of Bernie Wagenblast (67), a transgender woman who has been an announcer on the New York subway system since 2009.

Bernie says she has always known she was female. She remembers putting on necklaces and makeup in front of her grandmother’s dressing table at the age of four. But for most of her life she has lived as a man and worked as a professional voice actor without being able to reveal “her true self.”

She publicly came out as a transgender woman at the end of last year and from 2023 began using her new “female” voice full-time in her personal life. Since then she has received many supportive comments from subway riders who have been encouraged by her story.

TBS correspondent Jun Ohashi sat down with Bernie at her home to talk about her experience as a transwoman and being one of New York City’s most recognizable voices.
