Ms. Suzumi Kaneda was raised in a family that ran a doll workshop and grew up manufacturing koi-nobori and hina dolls. After graduating from college, at the end of her training, she acquired a craftsman’s technique for painting koi-nobori by hand that had been passed down since the Edo Period. Being different from the dyeing techniques used in mass production, one by one the hand-painted koi-nobori have rich expressions. This hand-painted koi-nobori was brought back after a 35-year hiatus. The koi-nobori have fine brush strokes and varying amounts of dye which is vital in making each one unique. Ms. Kaneda wants to hand this cultural tradition down to the next generation. What kind of future does she envision?
